The phenomenal GMA7 Eat Bulaga segment named Kalye Serye broke Twitter records last Saturday featuring AlDub’s first date. The episode garnered 12.1 MILLION tweets in 24 hours. Seven days later with Alden and Yaya Dub’s second Saturdate the episode with  ‪#AldubEBforLOVE‬ (OFFICIAL AlDub Tweet for today), now has 20 million tweets and counting. Considering that this article is being written on the 20th hour of the day (therefore 4 hours remain before we can have the final figure) we have a few more hours to further rack up the figure. Take note that Channel 2’s Showtime celebrated its anniversary today with a big bash in Araneta Coliseum so there was an expected strong Twitter effort on the part of the Kapamilya channel..

SWS is conducting political surveys for a FEE. Survey results are used as a basis for decisions to run or not, evaluate chances of electoral victory and attract cash contributions for the campaign of specific individuals or political parties. The most important characteristic of a survey firm is CREDIBILITY, the public perception that the results truly reflect the thinking and preferences of the interviewed population and that the said interviewed group or groups represent a much larger segment of Philippine society, in this case, registered voters.

A big problem in survey firms is that its methods of conducting the polling may not necessarily reflect the views of the larger population that it is supposed to represent due to a very limited sample size (the answers of 1200, 1800, 2000 or 2400 people are extrapolated to be the views of millions of people). Survey firms claim to have SCIENTIFIC METHODS at the same time that competing firms may have conflicting results. Lately Social Weather Station made a survey wherein a total of three answers could be given by the interviewee. The only result of this would be to inflate the percentage figures of both Senator Poe and DILG Secretary Roxas because both of them belong to the same Aquino Administration Coalition. The results are therefore MISLEADING, CONFUSING, STUPID  and does not reflect the true sentiments of the Filipino electorate. Since survey results can generate a BANDWAGON effect, a FLAWED survey report can unduly improve the public perception of a candidate. If enough people are swayed to shift to the leading candidate then a self-fulfilling prophecy situation arises.

Then here comes Social Weather  Station where its most prominent official, Mahar Mangahas, is an UNCLE of Presidential candidate Senator Grace Poe. This is patently UNETHICAL and a CONFLICT of INTEREST. Mangahas should either take a leave of absence from SWS or resign. SWS should also announce to one and all that Mangahas is an UNCLE of Presidential candidate Senator Grace Poe.

Elections 2016 is just around the corner and survey companies are conducting popularity polls to determine preferences of Filipino voters. The latest release of Social Weather Station shows Senator Grace Poe leading the Presidential contest. DILG Secretary Mar Roxas and Vice President Jejomar Binay also placed prominently. There is an ETHICAL ISSUE in the survey because the SWS top honcho, Mahar Kelly Mangahas, is a first COUSIN of Fernando Kelly Poe Jr., the father of Senator Poe. Mahar Mangahas is, therefore, an UNCLE of Grace Poe. DELICADEZA dictates that such affinity should make the survey firm INHIBIT itself in conducting polls where a CLOSE RELATIVE is involved. At the very least there should be a DISCLOSURE portion in the press release so as to inform the public that a  CONFLICT of INTEREST SITUATION is present and thus should be taken into consideration in the interpretation of the survey results.

Aside from the ETHICAL and MORALITY ISSUE, there is a big question on the METHODOLOGY in the latest survey. Interviewees could name a maximum of three choices. In a field of dozens of candidates, three may be considered as PRUDENT, but in a race where only three (four if you count Davao Mayor Rodrigo Duterte) are prominently mentioned, then what is the point of conducting the survey at all. Considering that the constituency and base voters of both Poe and Roxas are the same, then both benefited from a double or triple vote on the part of the person choosing his/her preferences. It would have been more informative if ONLY ONE candidate could be picked (which is how it is in REAL world elections). CONFUSING, MISLEADING and MEANINGLESS would be apt terms to describe this latest SWS survey. The most appropriate description should be STUPID.

Efforts to retrieve HIDDEN WEALTH (stolen money, theft of public funds) estimated to have amounted to USD 10 BILLION in 1986 have been MEASLY, at best and GRAFT RIDDEN (government officials in charge of confiscating or sequestering assets have connived with the accused to keep the assets out of Philippine hands, for a fee, of course) at its worst.

As the Marcos martial law years fade from our collective memory (since many of the victims have succumbed and time has taken its toll), there is an obvious attempt to present the Marcos DICTATORSHIP in rosier terms. The Marcos son in the Senate could run for President or Vice President in 2016, a FINAL INSULT to the graves of martial law victims.

In 2004 a well known COMMERCIAL (or COMMERCIALIZED) survey company predicted, rationalized, justified and defended the Gloria Macapagal Arroyo so-called Presidential elections victory. Later it was proven that massive fraud was committed for GMA to win using the CORRUPT Commission on Elections (“Hello Garci”). Up to today, two media COMMERCIAL (or COMMERCIALIZED) survey firms consistently come up with conflicting reports on the top television network in the Philippines. In other words, no matter how “scientific” their methods are, the results ALWAYS favor the person or company who/that COMMISSIONED the particular or specific survey. Senator Grace Poe announced her plan to run for President and, as expected, her bashers are out in droves calling her unprepared, opportunistic, an ingrate and worse. The main source of most of these personal attacks (some of which are below the belt) come from the very side that was just recently (some say up to now) praising her to the high heavens in an effort to convince her to run as Vice President under the Liberal Party ticket with DILG Secretary Mar Roxas as their standard bearer. As things appear right now, there is no turning back for Poe ensuring at least a three way fight for the Presidency (Vice President Binay, Secretary Roxas and Senator Poe, with a possible fourth candidate in the person of Davao Mayor Rodrigo Duterte).

The question keeps cropping up on why she is in such a hurry to run for President in 2016. Liberal Party stalwarts keep on stressing the point that she is still “unripe” for 2016 and that she could very well be the Liberal Party standard bearer in 2022 (assuming, of course, that Mar Roxas wins the Presidency in 2016, presumably with lots of help from Senator Poe). The LP was even floating the pipe dream of 18 years in the Philippine Presidential seat (Aquino 2010, Roxas 2016 and Poe 2022). All those dreams crashed when Poe decided to run on her own leaving Mar Roxas with no option but to fight it out with VP Binay and Senator Poe. Most surveys point to a poor third place finish for Roxas in this epic battle and a fourth place finish for Roxas if Duterte finally enters the fray as well.

Senator Poe is running because she has a far greater chance of winning than Roxas. She did not accept the Liberal Party draft to become their Vice Presidential bet because in 2004, when her father, Fernando Poe Jr., ran for President against then incumbent President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, the Liberal Party was complicit in CHEATING her father of the Presidency. FPJ died because of a broken heart. LP bigwigs, specifically Senators Frank Drilon and Kiko Pangilinan, RAILROADED the Senate canvassing process by repeatedly saying “NOTED” every time there was a question or objection raised by the FPJ electoral lawyers.

On the local front, Secretary Mar Roxas may have his hands full even in his own home turf as Congressman Albie Benitez, Chair of the Liberal Party in Negros Occidental, already publicly declared his support for Senator Poe. Needless to say, the poor survey results of Secretary Mar prompted many in the Aquino Administration Coalition to jump ship on the basis of the lack of winnability in candidate Roxas. Roxas ran and lost in 2010 for the Vice Presidential seat while his party mate Benigno Aquino won the Presidency. Mar Roxas was stabbed in the back by Aquino backers when they campaigned for a NoyBi (for Noynoy Aquino and Jejomar Binay, who won as Vice President) ticket. Those same Aquino allies are again plotting to sabotage the Roxas campaign with prominent personalities siding with either  Vice President Binay or Senator Poe for President in 2016.

Hopes for Mar Roxas to become Philippine President in 2016 took a massive hit with the announcement of Senator Grace Poe to run for President. Roxas has consistently lagged behind popularity surveys (tying former President Erap Estrada for fourth and fifth places with Senator Poe and Vice President Binay both alternating the number one and number two positions and Davao Mayor Rodrigo Duterte solidly at third place). The 2013 top placing Senator Poe was pursued by President Aquino, DILG Secretary Mar Roxas and the Liberal Party to become it’s Vice-Presidential candidate, an obvious effort to recruit voters for Roxas among the Poe faithful. With the Poe declaration and Senator Chiz Escudero anointed as her Vice Presidential running mate, the destruction of the Aquino Administration Coalition is now fast taking shape. Pragmatics in the Liberal Party and Aquino Government wanted to draft non-Liberal Party member Senator Poe to be the LP standard bearer due to her significant advantage in popularity surveys but Liberal Party die-hards prevailed in choosing the highly unpopular candidate but definitely loyal Liberal Party stalwart in the person of Mar Roxas.

Aside from the Liberal Party, other Aquino Coalition political parties would be split as well. The Nationalista Party has at least 3 Vice Presidential candidates (Marcos, Trillanes, Alan Cayetano) with no Presidential bet. The three NP leaders would have to find a Presidential candidate to tag along with or run independently as a Vice Presidential candidate. The Nationalist People’s Coalition could officially side with Senator Poe with its other members individually running under other tickets or campaigning for other Presidential and Vice Presidential bets.

Now comes news from the center of Mar Roxas country, perhaps one of the few areas where Mar Roxas can win by large margins over other opponents (Binay and possibly Duterte). Congressman Albie Benitez, chair of the Liberal Party in Negros Occidental, is openly endorsing Senator Grace Poe. The announcements of Senators Grace Poe and Chiz Escudero to run in 2016 for President and Vice-President respectively was hardly noticed in Facebook groups. Instead, posts and comments on Yaya Dub and Pastillas Girl hogged the Philippine social media scene. Psychologists should look into this situation where matters of national interest are largely IGNORED while the minutest details in television programs are watched and noted. Perhaps this phenomenon has something to do with a growing realization that politics as usual has NOT improved the lives of the greater masses of our people, that a change in administration will not necessarily bring solutions to TRAFFIC PROBLEMS, ELECTRICITY RATE HIKES, URBAN BLIGHT and APATHY courtesy of national leaders and line agencies. Poverty and unemployment abounds causing legions to abandon the REAL world and thereby ESCAPE (even momentarily) to the comforts, conflicts and daily struggles of fictional characters.
