September 21, 1972 will FOREVER be a DARK DAY in Philippine history when then President and future DICTATOR Ferdinand E. Marcos declared Martial Law. Under the pretext of lawlessness in the land, a NAKED POWER GRAB was initiated to perpetuate himself in power (for life, if he had his way). Thousands of political activists, many in their youth, were JAILED, TORTURED, KILLED or simply DISAPPEARED never to be heard of again leaving their families in torment up to today. Marcos was unceremoniously kicked out of power in EDSA 1 in 1986. He died in exile while his family successfully returned to the Philippines (his widow Imelda is a member of the Hose of Representatives, daughter Imee is Ilocos Norte Governor and son Bong Bong is in the Senate). Efforts to retrieve HIDDEN WEALTH (stolen money, theft of public funds) estimated to have amounted to USD 10 BILLION in 1986 have been MEASLY, at best and GRAFT RIDDEN (government officials in charge of confiscating or sequestering assets have connived with the accused to keep the assets out of Philippine hands, for a fee, of course) at its worst.
As the Marcos martial law years fade from our collective memory (since many of the victims have succumbed and time has taken its toll), there is an obvious attempt to present the Marcos DICTATORSHIP in rosier terms. The Marcos son in the Senate could run for President or Vice President in 2016, a FINAL INSULT to the graves of martial law victims.
