Duterte: Radio DJ and her boyfriend Emilio Lim were caught in possession of P3 million worth of drugs.

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – Radio DJ Karen Bordador and her boyfriend Emilio Lim were arrested after a buy-bust operation in Pasig City.

According to a report on TV Patrol, approximately P3 million worth of ecstasy, marijuana, and marijuana oil were found at a condo unit in Pasig City on Saturday, August 13. Also found at the unit were drug paraphernalia, money, and a money counting machine.

Senior Superintendent Tomas Apolinario told TV Patrol, “Itong operation na ito ay bunga ng direktiba ng ating chief PNP (Philippine National Police), na sugpuin ang ilegal na droga dito sa mga high-end clubs tsaka sa mga bars.”

(This operation is due to a directive from our chief PNP, that we should suppress the illegal drugs that can be found at high-end clubs and bars.)

“Siya [Lim] ang itinuturo na malaking nagsusupply sa mga nagtutulak sa mga clubs sa Makati at sa BGC (He [Lim] is said to be a big supplier among those who push drugs at clubs in Makati and BGC),” added Apolinario, in a report on 24 Oras. He said that the customers in those areas range from students and teenagers to wealthy people and celebrities.

“Ito ang mga bumibili sa kanila (These are the people who are buying drugs from them),” he said on TV Patrol.

In the same 24 Oras report, Bordador can be heard saying: “Wala po akong ginagawa… bumisita lang ako.” (I wasn’t doing anything… I just visited.)

SURIGAO CITY—Government records showed that nearly 2 million metric tons of nickel ore worth billions of pesos was extracted by a controversial mining firm in Tubay, Agusan del Norte province, whose politically connected owners are being publicly accused of plunder but have not been formally charged or investigated.

SR Metals Inc. (SRMI) and its subsidiary firms, San R Mining and Galeo Equipment and Mining Corp., shipped some 1.8 million MT of nickel from August 2006 to September 2007, according to records obtained by the Inquirer from the Philippine Ports Authority and the Mines and Geosciences Bureau.

The figure, critics said, represented a colossal disparity with what SRMI and its sister companies—then operating as small-scale mines—were allowed to extract and sell: 50,000 MT each per year, or 150,000 MT combined annual output for the three firms.

But after years of litigation and what many perceived as a slap-on-the-wrist penalty, SRMI paid P7 million in fines for over-extraction in 2007. No government agency has yet taken SRMI and its sister companies to court for the massive shipment of ore, which amounted roughly to P28 billion.

Appropriate time

Reached for comment, SRMI vice president for public and media affairs Ryan Anthony Culima said the company would respond to “these issues” at an appropriate time.

Last year, the Supreme Court rejected SRMI’s interpretation of the ore extraction limit. SRMI insisted that the 50,000-MT limit pertained to nickel and cobalt minerals in their purest form and excluded soil and other materials.

Upholding an earlier decision by the Court of Appeals (CA), the high court described SRMI’s interpretation as destructive to the environment.

Lawyer Elvin Grana, a legal counsel for a Butuan City-based businessman who is suing SRMI for a separate case involving royalty payments, said the Supreme Court ruling became final last month when the high court issued an entry of judgment.

What’s lacking?

“For all intents and purposes, the Supreme Court has decided on this case with finality,” Grana told the Inquirer on the phone from his office in Manila. “What’s lacking here is making SRMI accountable.”

Grana recalled that his client, Rodney Basiana, had filed a case in the Ombudsman seeking an investigation into SRMI and its owners for plunder. Filed in late 2006, he said, the case was shelved by the Ombudsman because the Department of Justice (DOJ) then issued a legal opinion favoring SRMI’s interpretation of the ore extraction limit.

Reached for comment, Basiana, who asserts that SRMI owes him more than P1 billion in royalties being the original claimant of the SRMI mine site, said the recent Supreme Court decision should pave the way for the Ombudsman to resume its investigation into SRMI.

Environmental advocates in Caraga Region voiced the same call.

Rev. Peter Vargas, coconvenor of environment group Caraga Watch, said they were willing to intervene in the SRMI case as interested parties “if no one dares to confront this powerful mining company.”

Powerful foe

But Vargas and Basiana, the businessman, admitted that taking on SRMI was an uphill battle, noting that the company’s owners were known supporters of the ruling Liberal Party (LP).

“I am now starting to believe the boast of Mr. Eric Gutierrez that he is malakas with the Liberal Party, particularly with Secretary Mar Roxas,” Basiana said. “Or is it that Erice is an influential member of the LP?”

Basiana was referring to SRMI chief executive officer Francis Enrico “Eric” Gutierrez and Caloocan Rep. Edgar Erice—an LP stalwart—who was listed as the firm’s president when the plunder complaint was filed. Erice has said he had divested himself of his shares in the company.

Former SRMI employees said Gutierrez bankrolled President Aquino’s 2010 campaign in Northern Mindanao, and was appointed LP head in Caraga Region for a time. Gutierrez was also described in media reports as the owner of the helicopter used to take pictures of the so-called “Hacienda Binay” of Vice President Jejomar Binay.

Vargas of Caraga Watch said the connections were too glaring to ignore.

“Nothing has been done. Is it because the owners are closely affiliated with the Liberal Party?” Vargas said.

(CNN Philippines) — The Philippines has its first medal in the 2016 Rio Olympics after Hidilyn Diaz finished with a score of 200kg at the women’s 53kg category in weightlifting on Monday.

Diaz’ silver medal is the country’s first since Onyok Velasco’s triumph at the 1996 games in Atlanta.

Initially thought to be a two-horse race between Chinese-Taipei’s Hsu Shu-Ching and China’s Li Yajun, the rest of the field was seen to be competing for the bronze.

It looked that way after Hsu and Li took a commanding lead after the snatch portion of the competition with scores of 101kg and 100kg, respectively.

While Latvia’s Rebeka Kohn led the rest of the pack with a score of 90kg.

In the clean and jerk portion, Diaz cleared 111kg on her first attempt, forcing Korea’s Yoon Jin Hee to successfully manage at least 111kg of her own.

Yoon scored 111kg on her third attempt, but the Filipina chalked up 112kg on her second attempt to secure at least a bronze medal for the country.

The Chinese-Taipei national logged in 112kg on the scoreboard with her first lift, placing her in pole position to notch the gold.

China’s Li attempted to lift 123kg on her first attempt, but failed due to a hyperextended left elbow. The failure proved to be the pivotal moment of the competition as Li could not complete any of her attempts in the clean and jerk portion.

Philippines gets 3rd silver medal in Olympics

The number 13 has turned out to be a lucky number for the Philippines after weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz broke a 20-year medal drought for the country after winning a silver medal in the Rio Olympics on Monday morning.

Diaz, 25, one of 13 Philippine athletes competing in Rio, finally won a medal after three Olympic stints. Her first was in the 2008 Beijing Games followed by the 2012 London Games where she also served as the flag-bearer.

It is only the Philippines’ third silver medal in the Olympics, and Diaz’s silver is the first outside of boxing.

Light flyweight boxer Mansueto ‘Onyok’ Velasco won the silver in the 1996 Atlanta Games.

The Philippines’ first silver medal was won by featherweight boxer Anthony Villanueva in the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.

The Philippines has won 7 bronze medals in the Olympics for a grand total so far of 10 medals (3 silvers) since 1928.

The Philippines has yet to win a gold medal in the Olympics. Bowler Arianne Cerdena won the gold in the 1988 Seoul Olympics when bowling was a demonstration sport.

(UPDATED) Three mayors have surrendered to Philippine National Police Chief, Director General Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa after learning that they were already in President Rodrigo Duterte’s list of drug suspects.

Maguing, Lanao del Sur Mayor Mamaulan Abinal Molok and former Marantao, Lanao del Sur Mayor Muhammad Ali Abo Abinal have admitted peddling drugs and vowed to change their ways. Mayor Rasul Sangki of Ampatuan, also surrendered to the PNP Chief.

“They already decided na magbagong buhay, at tumulong sa problema sa droga. Why run if you can help (They already decided to change their ways and help stop the drug problem),” Dela Rosa told reporters Friday, as he presented the local officials in Camp Crame.

“Talagang involved sila kaya sila nagsurrender (They were really involved that’s why they surrendered),” he added.

Abinal, for his part, said he is now supporting Duterte and Dela Rosa’s war against drugs.

“Willing ako pumunta dito, suportahan ko programa ng mahal na President Rodrigo Duterte at Chief PNP General Bato. Lahat ng suporta nami’y willing kami (I willingly went here to express my support for President Duterte and General Bato’s [anti-drug] program,” Abinal said, saying he was involved in the illegal drug trade back in 2000 to 2002.

Molok said he will also urge other suspects to surrender.

“Sa lahat ng abot ng makakaya ko, tutulong ako sa pagsugpo ng droga (I will do my best to help stop the drug trade),” he added.

Dela Rosa said the mayors were “down lines” of the so-called “Marimar,” Maguing, Lanao Del Sur former Mayor Johaira Macabuat, who was recently arrested in Cagayan de Oro.

Dela Rosa said the mayors were tied to drug trade in Quiapo and other parts of the country and were not operating in their own municipalities.

“They told me they were not involved in the distribution of drugs in their municipalities,” Dela Rosa said.

The two public officials were turned over to the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) after being presented to media.

“We will extract whatever we can from them for reference. We will subject them to some sort of custodial investigation,” said Dela Rosa.

DAVAO CITY – President Rodrigo Duterte said Friday morning that he will name more politicians involved in illegal drugs within the day.

According to Duterte, the list of politicians involved in drugs underwent an exhaustive intelligence monitoring. The same list had also been validated before it became final.

“This campaign, shoot to kill, will remain until the last day of my term kung mabuhay pa ako (if I am still alive). Pag binasa kita at nandiyan ka, bantay ka (If I read your name and you are there, be on your guard),” he said.

“I am not a court to give you due process. Ang bunganga ko hindi ito (My mouth is not) proceedings. Ang bunganga ko (My mouth) is open with threats and intimidation because it is my duty to inform the Filipino of what is happening in this country.” Hindi ko kailangan ang due process dito (I don’t need due process here),” he added.

In a statement, Presidential Spokesman Ernesto Abella said the President’s statement on narco-politicians “is congruent with government policy on maintaining and protecting peace and order in the nation.”

“He has given due and ample notice that the clear and present danger of drugs engulfing the nation will be addressed and law enforcers will neutralize those who resist or endanger the lives of arresting officers.”

Six people were killed in an encounter on Wednesday between policemen and the alleged hired underlings of a Leyte town mayor accused of coddling drug rings.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) confirmed that all six fatalities were Albuera Mayor Rolando Espinosa’s men, who supposedly exchanged gunfire in Sitio Tinago, Barangay Binolho at around 5:30 a.m.

PNP spokesperson Dionardo Carlos said police forces were patrolling around the village when they were ambushed by the suspects near the mayor’s three adjoining houses.

“The initial gunfire came from the suspected members of the Espinosa group and our police officers returned fire and fought it out,” Carlos said.

Residents told ABS-CBN News that the firefight lasted for several minutes.

Two of the assailants were killed near the mayor’s house; two near the house of the mayor’s son, Kerwin, who is allegedly a drug lord; and the other two in the first house of the mayor.

Authorities are pursuing six other suspects who ran to a suspected safehouse in Albuera, which police refused to divulge.

Recovered from the crime scene were 13 assorted long firearms, four caliber .45 pistols, and several rifle grenades, according to the PNP Public Information Office (PIO).

Police said the 12 were hit men of the alleged “Espinosa Group,” which is being linked to Mayor Espinosa and his son.

The encounter has left residents of the village fearing for their safety.

Last week, two bodyguards of Espinosa were arrested during a buy-bust operation in the same area.

President Duterte on Monday ordered Espinosa and his son, Kerwin, to surrender to authorities within 24 hours or else face shoot-to-kill orders.

Fearing for his safety, the mayor surrendered on Tuesday to Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa.

Espinosa later admitted that his son is a top drug trafficker in Eastern Visayas.

Dela Rosa said Kerwin’s drug source is a certain Peter Co, and that the drugs come from a prison facility in Abuyog, Leyte.

Bato to mayor’s son: surrender or die

The Bureau of Immigration confirmed that Kerwin left for Hong Kong last June 1, after allegedly undergoing facial plastic surgery.

The older Espinosa was scheduled to appear before the PNP Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) at Camp Crame, Quezon City later Wednesday.

Accompanied by his wife and daughter, who carried a signature Michael Kors bag, Espinosa arrived at the CIDG office in Camp Crame with his counsel at 2 p.m. He committed earlier to report to CIDG at 9 a.m.

His son Kerwin, who is also allegedly involved in drug trafficking, is still in hiding.

Espinosa will submit an affidavit of undertaking before CIDG head Chief Supt. Roel Obusan, who had conducted the questioning when the mayor surrendered to the police on Tuesday.

As of press time, the mayor, his family and lawyer are in a meeting with Obusan and the CIDG’s legal team.

Espinosa earlier made a promise to PNP chief Director General Ronald “Bato” de la Rosa that he would give his “100 percent” cooperation with the police during a press conference.

At about 4:30 a.m. Wednesday, six of Espinosa’s hired men died in a shootout with the police at a compound the Espinosa family owns in Sitio Tinago, Barangay Binulho in Leyte

Carlos said policemen were patrolling near the compound when Espinosa’s men opened fire at the cops.

Police recovered at least 13 high-powered firearms inside the compound. Authorities said there were 50 to 100 armed men inside the residence.

But Carlos said, based on the data from the PNP’s Firearms and Explosives Office, Espinosa owns three licensed firearms only–one shotgun and two Glock pistols, a 9 millimeter and a .40 caliber.

The police official said two pistols of Espinosa were considered illegally-owned after the license for both guns expired May this year.

Carlos said the PNP is still confirming if the armed men were hired as Espinosa’s private army group.

PALO, LEYTE, Philippines – Six armed men, said to be part of the private army of Albuera Mayor Rolando Espinosa and his son Kerwin, were killed in a shootout with police in their hometown early yesterday.

Acting police regional director Chief Supt. Elmer Cruz Beltejar said the lawmen returned fire at the armed group in Sitio Tinago, Barangay Benolho where three houses of the Espinosas are located.

Beltejar said the policemen were on routine patrol in the area when the armed group opened fire from one of the houses.

“These members of the Espinosa group were occupying one of the Espinosas’ houses, specifically where the rooster farm is located. They fired first, so our policemen were forced to fire back,” Beltejar said.

Beltejar said the six fatalities have yet to be identified.

Initial reports identified two of the slain suspects as Ricky Gravello of Ormoc City and Teresito Paderangga of Zamboanga City. Three others were only known as “Tatay,” “Edgar” and “Intsik.”

Beltejar said the policemen initially encountered around 12 men armed with automatic weapons.

After the firefight, some of the suspects escaped, leaving behind several high-powered assault rifles, automatic handguns and rifle grenades.

The clash came a day after Mayor Espinosa surrendered to Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Ronald dela Rosa.

Authorities alleged Espinosa has been protecting drug dealers, including his son Kerwin, who has not surrendered.

Espinosa surrendered within the 24-hour deadline given to him by President Duterte to yield or a “shoot-on-sight” order would be issued against him and his son. Dela Rosa has warned the younger Espinosa “will die” if he elects to shoot it out with police.

PNP spokesman Senior Supt. Dionardo Carlos said the armed men are believed to be part of the Espinosa group.

“There was no reason why policemen would open fire (first). The shots came from inside one of the houses, so after the exchange of gunfire the policemen went inside the house after the threat was neutralized. They entered only in the aftermath of the operation,” Carlos said.

Two of the slain suspects were found near the foyer of the mayor’s house, two were shot in the area where fighting cocks are bred and two others lay dead by the gate of Kerwin’s compound.

Carlos clarified the policemen were not on a mission to raid the Espinosa houses but they were on routine patrol when they figured in a firefight with the group.

“It is normal duty to conduct patrol operations in the community. The operation did not specifically target the compound of the mayor. Unfortunately, they were fired upon,” he said.

Carlos said the mayor will be asked by the police Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) about the presence of armed men in his house.

“We will trace the guns, the guns registered under his name should be at his house,” Carlos said.

Espinosa appeared before the CIDG yesterday, with his lawyer Romeo Esmero speaking on his behalf.

Esmero denied the armed men killed in the mayor’s house were his bodyguards.

The mayor never tolerated his son Kerwin’s forays into illegal drugs, the lawyer said.

Esmero also denied the mayor was involved in drug trafficking.

An emotional Espinosa, for his part, pleaded to his son to surrender, saying the PNP chief has given assurance to assist them.

“Kerwin please surrender. PNP chief Dela Rosa promised to help you,” Espinosa told reporters after he gave his statement before the CIDG in a closed-door meeting.

Carlos said authorities are looking into reports the younger Espinosa has already fled the country. There were reports that Kerwin underwent plastic surgery to change his facial appearance to evade arrest.

Reports said Kerwin left for Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia last June 21 on Cebu Pacific flight 5J501.

The Espinosas have been linked to major drug trafficking in Eastern Visayas.

Dela Rosa said Mayor Espinosa had been listed in police records as a “drug protector” whose son controlled the narcotics trade in the region.

The mayor was the second high-profile drug suspect to turn himself in after being accused of drug-related crimes by Duterte.

Another local official, Daanbantayan, Cebu Mayor Vicente Loot, was one of five police generals linked by Duterte to the illegal drug trade.

Loot is a retired police general who served as anti-narcotics unit chief of the Central Visayas regional police.

Loot denied the allegations of Duterte as well as reports linking him to Kerwin.

“I never knew him. I heard about him when I was Central Visayas (anti-narcotics) chief. I did not use him as an asset in illegal drugs,” he said.

President Rodrigo Duterte has given Mayor Rolando Espinosa of Albuera, Leyte and his son 24 hours to surrender over their alleged involvement in drug trafficking, Malacañang said Monday.

“Today, President Duterte demanded the surrender of Mayor Ronaldo  Espinosa Sr., of Albuera, Leyte and his son, Kerwin Espinosa, on the grounds of drug-trafficking and coddling, within 24 hours,” presidential spokesman Secretary Ernesto Abella said.

“Otherwise, an order of ‘shoot on sight’ will be given if they resist and endanger the lives of arresting police officers,” he added in a statement.

Reports say about P1.9 million worth of 237 grams of suspected shabu were recovered by authorities in a buy-bust operation last Thursday near the houses of the Espinosas.

Arrested during the operation were Mayor Espinosa’s two bodyguards and three employees.

A newspaper report earlier said Mayor Espinosa had gone on leave.

Leyte mayor on leave as 5 in his staff caught with P1.9M shabu

4 other suspects escape, seek refuge in mayor’s compound

ALBUERA, Leyte — Two bodyguards of  Albuera Mayor Rolando Espinosa and his three employees were arrested during a buy-bust operation on Thursday afternoon where at least P1.9 million worth of shabu were recovered.

Four other suspects managed to escape after they went inside the house of Kerwin Espinosa, the mayor’s son, and locked the gate, the police said.

The house of Kerwin is located inside a gated compound where his father also lives.

Chief Insp. Jove Espinido, Albuera police chief, said they had no authority to barge into the compound after the gate was locked.

“We want a fair fight. We don’t want martial law,” he added. He did not say what his next legal move would be to compel the Espinosas to surrender the suspects.

The buy-bust operation was conducted about 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, at the tennis court near the houses of the mayor and his son at Sitio Tinago, Barangay Benolho in this town.

The Philippine Daily Inquirer tried to reach Mayor Espinosa but was told that he had gone on leave since last week.

Arrested during the operation were two of the mayor’s bodyguards – Jessie Ocares, 34; and Marcelo Adorco, 40 – and his three employees – Jose Antipuesto, Jeffrey Pesquera and  Ernesto Dumalat.

Antipuesto, 36, who took care of the mayor’s fighting cocks, was the target of the buy-bust operation after the police received reports that he was selling the illegal substance, said Espinido.

He said a poseur buyer bought P300 worth of shabu from Antipuesto.

When the undercover policeman announced it was a sting operation, several men at the tennis court scampered in different directions.

But the joint team of the local police and the Regional Police Safety Battalion was able to collar Antipuesto and four others.

Although Ocares and Adorco were armed, they didn’t put up a fight.

Four men managed to escape by seeking refuge to the house of Kerwin.

Seized from Ocares were a .45-caliber pistol and a pack of shabu weighing 84 grams. A .45 caliber pistol and a packet of shabu weighing 121 grams were recovered from Adorco.

At least 14.8 grams of shabu were recovered from Antipuesto.

Pesquera, 39 and a native of Cebu City, also worked for the mayor as caretaker of his fighting cocks.  Shabu was also found in his possession.

Dumalat, 20, and another employee of the mayor, was caught with two small packs of shabu weighing 3.7 grams.

The suspects denied owning the shabu recovered from them.  All in all, the packets of shabu would reach P1.9 million in street value.

Adorco and Ocares said guns seized by the police were covered by licenses and a permits to carry firearms.

The five were detained at the Albuera police lock up cell pending filing of charges for violating the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 (Republic Act 2002).
