USA TODAY Sports’ Jeff Zillgitt breaks down the Cavaliers’ thrilling overtime victory against the Atlanta Hawks in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Finals.

CLEVELAND — Breaking down Cleveland’s 114-111 overtime victory over the Atlanta Hawks in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference finals:

What happened: LeBron James’ three-pointer with 36.4 seconds left in overtime put the Cavs ahead 112-111, and James altered Jeff Teague’s driving layup with 30.9 seconds left. Then, James’ driving shot with 12.8 seconds put the Cavs up 114-111.Shelvin Mack missed two-three-pointers in the final 4.9 seconds as Cleveland outscored Atlanta 10-7 in overtime, taking a 3-0 series lead.

Atlanta had a chance to win: With the score tied 104-104 and 17.1 seconds left in the fourth quarter, the Hawks had the ball. Jeff Teague dribbled at the top of the key with James defending. DeMarre Carroll set a screen that gave Teague a bit of room, but Teague missed a three-point attempt at the buzzer.

Big numbers for James after slow start: James, who played with a bum right knee, missed his first 10 shots and was 3-for-16 from the field at halftime. Yet, James finished with a triple-double – 37 points, 18 rebounds and 13 assists.

James’ triple-double: It was James 12th career playoff triple-double, and the first since the 2013 NBA Finals. He had been close several times in the 2015 playoffs, either coming an assist or rebound shy in three previous playoff games. James is second on the all-time playoff triple-double list, breaking a three-way tie with Larry Bird and Jason Kidd. Magic Johnson leads with 30 career playoff triple-doubles. It was also James’ 54th career playoff game with at least 30 points, five rebounds and five assists, and his sixth of these playoffs.

Dellavedova-Horford incident: With 34.3 seconds with in the second quarter, Al Horford and Matthew Dellavedova went for a loose ball. Dellavedova fell into Horford and Horford reacted, throwing an elbow at Dellavedova. Referees called a flagrant two on Horford, who has a sterling reputation, resulting in an automatic ejection. Dellavedova was called for a technical foul. It was an unfortunate circumstance for the shorthanded Hawks because Horford was their best player in the first half, scoring 14 points on 7-for-10 shooting.

Dellavedova, a central character: Dellavedova has been a vital player for Cleveland, especially with Kyrie Irving limited because of injuries. He was involved in an incident that resulted in Taj Gibson’s ejection in the Chicago series and was the player who fell on Kyle Korver’s ankle in Game 2, resulting in a severe high ankle sprain and the end of Korver’s season. Dellavedova, certainly a guy who irritates opponents, also scored a playoff-career high 19 points against the Bulls in series-clinching Game 6 and had 17 points Sunday in Game 3 against the Hawks.

What worked for the Cavaliers: Cleveland had another strong game from three-point range, making 14-for-36, and Cleveland guards J.R. Smith, Iman Shumpert and Dellavedova all scored in double figures with 17, 15 and 17 points.

What worked for the Hawks: Paul Millsap had his best of the series: 22 points and nine rebounds after scoring 15 points total on 5-for-19 shooting in the previous two games. The Hawks also had their best three-point shooting game, making 11-for-30 (36.7%). Jeff Teague had 30 points, seven assists and six rebounds. The Hawks used more of Mike Scott and Shelvin Mack and less of Dennis Schroder and Mike Muscalain Game 3.

Cavs injury report: Kyrie Irving (tendinitis left knee, strained right foot) missed his second consecutive game, and with the Cavaliers up 3-0 in the series, the Cavs are in position to let him heal until it’s necessary he play – later in this series if Atlanta wins or game or two or the start of the NBA Finals.

Hawks injury report: Kyle Korver missed the game with a severe high right ankle sprain, and DeMarre Carroll, who sprained his left knee in Game 1, had 10 points.

Up next: Game 4 is Tuesday in Cleveland, and the Cavaliers can sweep the series. No team has come back from a 3-0 deficit in NBA playoff history.

‘Man at ATM’ only NBI lead in missing traders’ case

THE NBI-TAGGED suspect as seen at an ATM booth in Binangonan.photos by RICHARD A. REYES

The National Bureau of Investigation is tracking down a man who was seen withdrawing money and draining the bank account of one of the two business partners who went missing in January.

The NBI has released a photo taken of the still-unidentified man inside an automated teller machine (ATM) booth, tagging him as a suspect in the disappearance of Evan Labonete, 52, and Nicomedes Sierra Eguna, 55, building contractors both based in Quezon City.

According to Eguna’s wife, Nicomedes last sent her a text message around 3 p.m. on Jan. 19, telling her that he and Labonete were on their way to inspect a project in Antipolo City.

The two men were taking public transportation at the time and could no longer be reached when she tried to contact Nicomedes two hours later.

In a press conference on Friday, agent Aldrin Mercader of the NBI’s Anti-Organized and Transnational Crime Division said an ATM withdrawal for P10,000 was made from Labonete’s account on Jan. 21.

Two more withdrawals, for P7,000 and P700, were made from the same account on Jan. 22. All three transactions were done at ATMs in Binangonan town, Rizal province.

The NBI produced a photo of the suspect from the security camera footage of the third transaction.

“Except for the photo, we are facing a blank wall in the investigation,” Mercader said. “The families of the missing men have decided to involve the public in the search, in the hope that anyone who has information on the two men or the suspect will come forward. The last four months of anxiety have taken their toll on the families.”

Quoting the wives, Mercader said the missing business partners “are not big time contractors” and that their families had not been contacted by anyone demanding ransom.

1) 2014 BLOG POST ON CONRADO DE QUIROZ STROKE AND COMA GOES VIRAL. 2) SAMAR GROUP AND LIBERAL PARTY COULD BOTH SPLIT UP

1) 2014 blog post on Conrado De Quiroz stroke and coma goes viral.http://wp.me/p3QDQJ-KH Readers express support.

2) Samar group could split between Binay and Poe. President Aquino’s powerful 2010 elections support force, called Samar Group because of the meeting place in the street with that name, strongly campaigned for a NoyBi tandem in spite of the fact that both candidates belonged to different political parties. The rest, of course, is history when both Noynoy Aquino and Jojo Binay won the Presidency and Vice-Presidency, respectively. For 2016, members of that group could part ways as the Binay loyalists (Directress Maria Montelibano, Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa and Communications Secretary Herminio) and supporters of Senator Grace Poe, for President or Vice President (Senator Chiz Escudero, a possible Poe running mate and Speaker of the House Sonny Belmonte) take opposing sides, effectively splitting the Samar Group.

3) Liberal Party headed for a split – Diehard Mar Roxas followers are not giving up his Presidential bid in spite of very poor popularity and satisfaction ratings. Efforts to invite the more popular Senator Grace Poe to be the Liberal Party standard beared do not sit well with the Roxas faction. This early, the citizenship issue that once bugged the Presidential candidacy of Senator Poe’s father (FPJ) in 2004, is being revived, this time targetting the daughter. Don’t look now but it is not the Binay camp floating the “natural born Filipino” question on the neck of Senator Grace Poe, it is the Mar Roxas people doing all the talking.

Poe-Roxas or Poe-Escudero would either downgrade or dump Mar Roxas

Tying up Grace Poe in court could stop the growing momentum for her to run for President and allow Mar Roxas to challenge the front-running Vice President Binay. An Aquino administration disaster would be a situation wherein both Roxas and Poe would run against Binay.

OAKLAND, United States–NBA Most Valuable Player Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors edged the Houston Rockets 99-98 on Thursday (Friday, Manila time) to strengthen their advantage in the Western Conference finals.

Curry again came out on top in a duel with James Harden, the Warriors stifling the Rockets star in the moments before the final buzzer to preserve the win.

They took a two-games-to-none lead over the Rockets in the best-of-seven series, with the winners to take on the Eastern Conference champions in the NBA finals.

Golden State had to battle to the bitter end. Their eight-point lead was trimmed to one after Harden’s alley-oop pass to Dwight Howard with 33 seconds remaining.

After Harrison Barnes missed a reverse layup at the other end, the Rockets raced the ball up the court.

But Harden was double-teamed by Curry and Klay Thompson as the clock ticked down, passing to Howard on the perimeter.

Howard tossed the ball right back, Curry poked the ball away, and the Rockets were unable to get a potential game-winning shot off.

Curry led the Warriors with 33 points, including five three-pointers.

The hosts, who let slip an early 16-point lead to head into halftime tied 55-55, regrouped to take a 77-75 lead into the final period.

Warriors coach Steve Kerr said he expected every game in the series to be a similar back-and-forth battle.

“We’re right where we need to be,” said Kerr, whose team led the league with 67 regular-season victories.

“We won the two at home. Now we head to Houston. Every game is probably going to be like this.”

Harden finished with a game-high 38 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists for the Rockets, who host game three on Saturday.

Houston center Howard had 19 points and 17 rebounds, playing 40 minutes despite suffering a strained left knee in game one.

Cleveland tops Atlanta to open Eastern Conference finals

.

Atlanta (AFP) – LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers defeated the top-seeded Atlanta Hawks97-89 on Wednesday to open the NBA Eastern Conference finals.

With a berth in the NBA championship finals on the line in the best-of-seven series, J.R. Smith set a Cavaliers club record for three-pointers, draining eight from beyond the arc.

His 28 points accounted for all of the scoring by Cleveland reserves.

“I was just trying, if anything, to take good shots,” Smith said. “I got in a rhythm early and just stayed aggressive.”

Smith’s long-range bombs came in bunches, including three in the first two minutes of the fourth quarter as he helped Cleveland build an 18-point lead.

He broke James’s prior Cavaliers record for three-pointers in a playoff game by one. James made three against Washington in game four of the 2006 Eastern conference quarter-finals.

“Those who know J.R. know when he gets hot, he gets smoking hot,” said Cavaliers coach David Blatt.

“He was terrific. Probably overlooked is how well he defended and that he got eight rebounds.”

Four-time NBA Most Valuable Player James scored 31 points, pulled down eight rebounds and handed out six assists for the Cavaliers.

He said defense was the key to the victory.

“We’re the number one defensive team in the playoffs. In order for us to win, ultimately we have to defend,” said James, who is playing in his fifth straight Eastern Conference finals after four appearances with Miami.

“Tonight we shot 44 percent from the field, but we defended. We gave ourselves a chance. When you defend at a high level you’re going to give yourself a chance to win every night.”

James has won two titles with the Heat and returned to his home state and first NBA team the Cavaliers, vowing to bring Cleveland a championship.

He sealed Wednesday’s victory with a thundering dunk in the final minute.

Tristan Thompson added 14 points and 10 rebounds in the win and Kyrie Irving had 10 points and six assists in 27 minutes.

Jeff Teague scored 27 points to lead Atlanta, but the Hawks lost starting forward DeMarre Carroll to a left leg injury in the fourth quarter.

Carroll, who appeared to hyperextend his left knee when he planted his foot to take a shot, crumpled to the floor in pain.

Rival James gave him some encouraging pats as Hawks personnel helped him from the court.

“At the end of the day, we’re all a brotherhood,” James said. “You never want anyone to get injured, even in combat.”

Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer said Carroll would have an MRI exam on Thursday to assess the severity of the injury.

“At this point, I think the doctors are saying it’s a knee sprain,” Budenholzer said. “We’ll know tomorrow.”

The Cavaliers will try to strengthen their grip on the series in game two on Friday.

The winners of the series will take on the Western Conference champions in the NBA Finals.

Golden State, the best team in the regular season, leads Houston 1-0 in the Western Conference championships.

Yellow Netizens Firm on Mar Roxas for President

Despite consistent and persistent poor performance in popularity and acceptance surveys, Mar Roxas is far and away the only viable Presidential candidate for 2016 according to Yellow Netizens. This small but vocal segment of the Philippine population is rabidly pro Aquino Administration and considers P-Noy as the best President our country ever had. Among their ranks too is the call for another six years for P-Noy as leader of the land. The Philippine Constitution only allows a single six year term for Presidents so for P-Noy to run for a second term in 2016 needs a Constitutional amendment. Well, if Batman P-Noy can not run next May, then who but Robin Mar should head the Liberal Party ticket. News about some Liberal Party members toying with the idea of adopting Senator Poe as Presidential candidate does not faze the loyal Liberal Party base. Yellow Netizens are banking on the Ombudsman and/or the Justice Department to make life miserable for frontrunning Vice President Jojo Binay. In the Liberal Party wish list are a number of scenarios: Jojo Binay in jail, Jojo Binay suspended as Vice President, and Jojo Binay resigning his cabinet position. It is the view of the Yellow Netizens that a gravely weakened, battered and staggering Binay would somehow find a way for Mar Roxas to win the Presidency.

Justice Secretary De Lima Freezes Investigation of Second Batch Senators in PHP 10 Billion Napoles Pork Barrel Fund Scam

senators 6After months of stating that the second batch of senators for persecution in the PHP 10 Billion Napoles Pork Barrel Fund Scam is in process, now here comes Justice Secretary Leila De Lima to contradict herself and declare that there will be no second batch of senators to be indicted (at least while she remains as Justice Secretary). The Department of Justice is simply too busy to attend to such trivial matter. After all what is a few hundred millions of pesos of public funds going to the pockets of senators, congressmen and congresswomen, plus heads and top officials of the line agencies of the Executive Department. Such an announcement was long predicted by conspiracy theorists that have always maintained that the current administration’s Tuwid na Daan (Straight Path) is just a fancy term that means nothing at all. Actually Tuwid na Daan means Justice in such issues as grand scale graft and corruption which is why sitting senators Juan Ponce Enrile, Jinggoy Estrada and Bong Revilla are now in jail for PLUNDER. The only problem is that the Tuwid na Daan’s concept of JUSTICE is, in truth, SELECTIVE JUSTICE. Perish the thought of a blindfolded Lady Justice holding court and passing judgment on the poor and the almighty, the well connected and the social outcasts, the professionals and the uneducated.

So who are now getting away scot-free? Senators Bong Bong Marcos, Loren Legarda and Tito Sotto are sleeping better these nights. All three had very prominent roles in the Napoles NGOs involving hundreds of millions of pesos.  Senator Gringo Honasan (of PhilForest fame) also dodged the PLUNDER BULLET. The lesson here is that political opponents of the Aquino Administration go to jail while allies laugh all the way to the bank. Sometimes it does not pay to steal in the Philippines (ask JPE, Jinggoy and Bong) but sometimes CRIME DOES PAY (just ask Bong Bong, Loren, Tito and Gringo).

Mar Roxas Ilalaglag, Liberal Party Magwawatakwatak

Abangan. Sa Oktubre na po ang filing of the certificate of candidacy. Sa Mayo 2016 naman ang pambansang halalan. Si Chiz Escudero bilang bise Presidente po ang gustong katambal ni Grace Poe.
