2013 Senatorial race topnotcher, Senator Grace Poe is set to announce her plan to run for President of the Republic of the Philippines in 2016. Today’s move would pit the daughter of Fernando Poe Jr. against her ally in the Aquino Administration, DILG Secretary and former Senator, Mar Roxas who has been anointed to succeed President P-Noy. A Poe run for the Presidency would split the Aquino Administration coalition, the Liberal Party (headed by both President Aquino and Mar Roxas), the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC headed by Aquino uncle Danding Cojuangco), the Nationalista Party (which will not field a Presidential candidate) and other smaller political parties because of the weakness of Mar Roxas to win on the basis of acceptance and popularity surveys. Roxas has consistently lagged behind Vice President Binay (a declared Presidential candidate), Senator Grace Poe and Davao Mayor Rodrigo Duterte (who keeps everybody guessing as to his 2016 plans). Vice President Binay led all popularity surveys from many months back but Senator Poe edged the Vice President after graft and corruption allegations hounded him. He has, however, regained a slim lead based on a government TV station survey. Major polling companies have an all-important survey later this month, just prior to the filing of Certificates of Candidacy for elective positions in October, 2015.
